EVERETT: (62%) The Aldermen referred the proposed ordinance carrying a $300 fine to the Committee on Rules and Ordinances for further hearing sometime in March, but it has not happened.  Everett residents please keep contacting the members of the Committee: Aldermen This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. FALL RIVER: (58%) The City Council passed a resolution seeking information from the Police Department about how the decriminalization of possessing small amounts of marijuana has affected the city.  This may be in anticipation of a local ordinance.

 

GARDNER:  (63%) At the urging of the police department the City of Gardner is expected to take up such a proposal in the near future.  Gardner residents are urged to contact the Mayor, at-large-councilors and their ward councilors.

 

LOWELL: (65%) "What we're attempting is to get a city ordinance ... that makes it an illegal and arrestable offense to smoke [marijuana] in public," says Capt. Randall Humphrey of the city of Lowell police department. "We're not sure if we will be able to do it, but that's our goal."   It does not appear from the city website that the Mayor and Council have started the process, but it is never to early to be vocal about this issue with your local politicians.  LOWELL residents contact your mayor and council.

 

 

MEDFORD: (69%) The Medford City Council Subcommittee on Public Safety met March 24 to to review Council Resolution 09-024 — “Local Options relative to fines and other penalties to marijuana usage in public places.”  This is the first step in this city's going "reefer mad."  Medford residents please be vocal with your City Council.

 

MELROSE: (65%) Chief Lyle has proposed to the Board of Aldermen an ordinance imposing the $300 fine for public marijuana use, although he has said he is "on the fence" as to whether the fine should be issued as a civil citation or criminal offense. Melrose residents please contact the mayor, the at large aldermen and their ward alderman!

 

NORTH ADAMS: (59%) The Berkshire Eagle is reporting that the city's Police Commissioner is recommending that city's council adopt an ordinance including the criminal charges.  North Adams residents please contact This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. PITTSFIELD: (57%)  The Berkshire Eagle is reporting that the city's Police Department is recommending that city's council adopt adopt an ordinance including the criminal charges.  Pittsfield residents please contact Mayor James M. Ruberto and your ward and at-large City Councilors. We hope to have the actual language by early next week.

 

REVERE: (61%) On March 24, an ordinance to impose a civil fine on anyone smoking marijuana in public was sent back by the City Council to the subcommittee level for legal revision after a public hearing last Monday. The ordinance was proposed by councilor George Rotondo in response to a law decriminalizing possession of an ounce or less of marijuana approved by voters statewide last year. Rotondo said the ordinance should come out of subcommittee in time for the next council meeting on April 6, when he expects it will be taken up for a vote. -Boston Globe North 03-29-09, but it did not make the agenda.

Revere residents are urged to contact Mayor and councilors at large and their district councilor.

 

WATERTOWN: The town council has already sent to committee such a proposal! The Committee on Rules and Ordinances held a meeting this past week and a follow-up meeting will be scheduled for some time in February, said Councilor Angeline Kounelis, chairwoman of the committee.  Watertown residents are urged to attend the meeting and/or contact the councilors at large and their district councilor.
